To discover
Vilnius is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in Central Europe and its historical center spared by the two world wars is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also a contemporary city with its skyscrapers, shopping centers and is the political, economical, scientific and cultural center of the country.
Vilnius is a cosmopolitan city with a wide variety of architecture. The city has 65 churches. Like most medieval towns, it is built around its town hall. With an area of 3.6 km², the historical center of Vilnius is one of the largest in Europe. The most remarkable historical buildings are concentrated there. The old town’s buildings (there are almost 1,500) were built over the centuries, thus forming a mixture of many architectural styles. Although Vilnius is known to be a Baroque city, there are magnificent Gothic (like the Church of St. Anne) and Renaissance buildings here, among others.
Almost half of the city is covered by green spaces : parks, public gardens or nature reserves. Furthermore, Vilnius is home to many lakes, where locals and tourists can swim and have a picnic during the summer.
Visit the city of Klaipeda, on the shores of the Baltic Sea. And of course the other Baltic countries : Latvia and Estonia.
Good to know
Cheap destination in Europe. A great restaurant costs less than 10 €.
In the early 20th century, Vilnius was known as “the Jerusalem of the North” with a large Jewish population (40% of the city). During World War II, Lithuania was first annexed by the Soviet Union (people were sent to gulags) and then occupied by the Germans who slaughtered 95% of the Jewish population within 2 years. After the war, Lithuania was unfortunately incorporated into the Soviet Union again until 1990 !
Vilnius was the first European city to launch a “rent and share” system for electric bikes.
